Samit Patel will captain Marylebone Cricket Club as they compete in the Hong Kong Sixes for the first time.

Patel, who picked up the NatWest PCA Players’ Player award after a successful year with Nottinghamshire, will team up with Hampshire all-rounder Gareth Berg plus John Simpson, Jack Leaning, Ryan Higgins, Rikki Clarke and Darren Stevens.

The MCC will be the only club team in the five-overs-a-side tournament, which returns this weekend for the first time since 2012.

Australia, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, New Zealand Kiwis, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and South Africa will also be in action at Kowloon Cricket Club.

“We are very excited,” said MCC head of cricket John Stephenson. “We have selected a strong squad with a good amount of international experience amongst it.”

Berg, 36, has never played international cricket but has enjoyed three good seasons with Hampshire after joining them from Middlesex, for whom he made his Championship debut in 2008.

Higgins played two seasons for Bashley Rydal in the Southern Premier League - in 2012 and 2013 - and recently left Middlesex to sign for Gloucestershire.
