SAINTS are not set to make an immediate decision on manager Russell Martin's future despite a winless start to the Premier League season.

The St Mary's side sit 19th in the table with just one point from eight matches after their staggering 3-2 loss at home to Leicester City.

Saints were cruising towards their first league win with a two-goal lead in the 64th minute but slipped to defeat after a Ryan Fraser red card.

Jordan Ayew netted with the last kick of the game as Martin's charges were again unable to defend a corner kick effectively.

Martin is under pressure to turn the club's form around with crucial matches against relegation rivals Everton and Wolves coming up soon.

Sky Sports reported that the club's hierarchy have no immediate plans to sack Martin, following his play-off promotion success last season.

They detail that Saints are "keen to avoid hasty decision-making based on emotion, instead retaining emphasis on the club's long-term strategy".

The Daily Echo understands Martin is to take charge of the side for at least the visit to Manchester City, in which expectations against the champions are low.

Saints visit Premier League winners Man City on Saturday with low expectations of a shock result against Pep Guardiola's formidable side.

It is considered more important to see a galvanised response and togetherness amongst the players, similar to the recent 3-1 defeat at Arsenal.

However, a home clash with Everton and a visit to Wolves follow in the league, after a Carabao Cup match against Stoke City, and are likely to be definitive.

Saints owners Sport Republic sacked Nathan Jones after just eight matches in charge, although the Welshman had triple the points Martin has won.

Saints went on to be relegated from the league during the 2022/23 season, having had three managers over the course of the campaign.

Martin was asked if he feared for his future following the shock defeat to the Foxes but insisted he has no worries about being sacked.

The 38 year old said: "No. I had a brilliant chat with Dragan Solak and the guys yesterday. We had a board meeting.

"It was a planned meeting so you can relax. I wouldn't give you any details even if we were sitting top of the Premier League."

Martin's Saints were 1-0 winners over Leeds United at Wembley Stadium in the Championship play-off final just nine competitive games ago.

Saints conceded just one goal across three play-off matches when they famously dispatched West Brom 3-1 in front of an electric St Mary's.
