FORWARD Che Adams said he is "proud to be leaving" Saints with his "head held high" upon joining Torino on a three-year deal.

The Scotland international's move to Italy marks the official end of his five-year stint at Saints, having joined from Birmingham City in 2019.

Adams made 191 appearances for the St Mary's club, scoring 48 times. He hit 15 league goals last season as Saints won promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Manager Russell Martin remained in contact with Adams over the summer but admitted last week that a deal to re-sign the 28 year old was "unlikely."

Martin felt Saints offered Adams a "brilliant contract" but stressed it was his "prerogative to take his time and assess the situation."

Adams promised to help Saints return to the Premier League and admitted he is proud to have delivered on that pledge.

In a statement on Instagram, Adams wrote: "Thank you, Southampton Football Club.

"I’m so grateful for the last five years. Southampton became home to me and my family, and we were surrounded by some amazing people and players.

"Thank you to everyone, from the backroom staff, to the kitchen staff, to the coaches, for all your support and guidance since I stepped into Staplewood in 2019.

"I’m proud to be leaving with my head held high, getting this club back to where it belongs. We made you fans a promise, and it gives me such pride we delivered.

"Thank you for all the support, you’ve followed us home and away in incredible numbers, and it meant so much.

"Wishing you all the best for the future! Che."
