MANCHESTER United have approached Saints over the hire of director of football Jason Wilcox, the Daily Echo understands.
However, there is disagreement over the compensation fee the Red Devils must pay Saints for his release.
The Premier League giants want Wilcox to work as soon as possible but will have to pay a satisfactory fee to release him from serving his notice period.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Wilcox has resigned following the two clubs failing to agree compensation.

It likely means Wilcox will have to serve a notice period before he can begin work at Old Trafford, if the move is confirmed.
Man United have briefed that they hope an 'amicable' solution can be found.
Saints are in the midst of a battle for promotion from the Championship. A financial offer equivalent to a year of his contract was made.
New United chief executive Omar Berrada knows Wilcox well from their time together at Manchester City.
Wilcox worked his way up from coach to academy director during 11 years at the club, before joining Saints last summer.
