SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Danny Röhl is looking forward to returning to St Mary's and showing what his team are capable of.

Röhl, 34, formerly worked at Southampton as Ralph Hasenhüttl's assistant manager before departing for Bayern Munich in 2019.

Since taking over at the Owls, Röhl has won seven of his 16 games in all competitions.

That saw him be nominated for December's Sky Bet Manager of the Month award alongside Russell Martin.

Speaking ahead of Sheffield Wednesday's trip to Southampton this weekend, Röhl admitted he is eager to return to his former stomping ground.

He said: “I found my love of English football (while working at Saints.) I know that the football in England is special. The supporters are crazy and love the game.

“I’m looking forward to going back to Southampton. It was a great time there. I should say thank you to all the people that are there.

“Now I come back with my team. It’s about showing what we can do and hopefully, we take something there.”

The former Germany assistant admitted that his time spent at Saints was the reason he wanted to return to English football.

“When I left Southampton my goal was always to come back to the UK," he continued.

“You never know when - it’s always about timing, but it was clear to me that I wanted to come back.

Daily Echo:

“Now I am here as manager at a fantastic club who have a big challenge ahead."

Despite still sitting 22nd in the Championship, Wednesday have seen improvements since the German took over.

As he pointed out, they are fourth in the form table over the last eight games having earned 15 points.

That is only three points less than a Southampton side currently in the midst of a 19-game unbeaten run.

Asked about the challenge Saints will pose his side, Röhl replied: “Southampton have a fantastic team and a good manager.

“They have been unbeaten for a long time, (they have) all the things (needed).

“But, when you look at the form table from the last eight games, you see Sheffield Wednesday in fourth.

“It shows a lot about what we have done in the past. I have told my players that we have to be brave there."
