SAINTS manager Russell Martin revealed “exciting” signing Shea Charles will not play in defence long-term despite a cameo at Reading.

The 19 year old arrived at St Mary’s from Manchester City for a fee of more than £10million the evening before flying out to Turkey for pre-season.

Northern Ireland international Charles, who spoke exclusively with the Daily Echo while out in Izmir, did not feature in the club’s 1-1 draw with Goztepe.

He made his friendly debut for Martin during Saturday’s 4-2 victory over League One Reading, coming on in centre-back – where he has filled in for City’s academy.

However, both Charles and Martin have now indicated his long-term role for Saints will be at the base of midfield.

"He's playing in a position he won't play for us long term, but he can definitely fill in there because he's done it a lot at Man City and the age groups," Martin said when asked about Charles after the game.

"So yeah, we liked him. He's going to be a really good player. Again, he's another one who's come into a new environment.

“That means he's got a lot of learning to do, but he's been really willing to embrace it, he's been great and he's exciting for us.”

Charles became the club’s second permanent signing of the summer after former Swansea City defender Ryan Manning just days earlier, over a week ago.
