EASTLEIGH are through to the FA Cup first round after two penalties for Scott Rendell.

Rendell opened the scoring with an 11th-minute spot-kick after Tom Bearwish was tripped.

Welling replied with a headed equaliser ten minutes later.

But Ben Williamson restored the Spitfires’ lead in the 29th minute, scoring from the rebound after his header from a Jack Payne cross was saved.

Rendell netted his second penalty of the night in the 51st minute, following a handball. And within five minutes Bearwish headed Eastleigh’s fourth from Sam Smart’s excellent cross.

Welling pulled one back with a late cross-shot but there was no preventing Eastleigh’s passage into the first round and a trip to Southern League Stourbridge next month.

Manager Ben Strevens said: “It was a really good win. The important thing was to get through to the next round and there were some really good individual performances. We played some really good stuff, especially in the first half and Reds’ (Rendell) was excellent, he linked up play intelligently.

“In the last couple of years we’ve gone out at home to lower league opposition but we were by far the better team even if we were a bit sloppy at the end.

“Stourbridge will be tough but we’ve got some important league games before then.”
