Saints picked up their first win of the season against Brighton on Saturday thanks to goals from Moussa Djenepo and Nathan Redmond.

Here are five things we learned from the match:

1. Djenepo is up and running:

If Djenepo could script how he could score his first goal for Saints, it wouldn’t be too different from what occurred at the Amex Stadium.

Just minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute the winger curled his strike into the top corner in a similar fashion to what Sadio Mane did against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side last weekend.

2. Ralph Hasenhuttl deployed his preferred system:

Having played 5-3-2 in their opening two games, Hasenhuttl reverted to his favoured 4-2-2-2 which saw him hand a debut to Kevin Danso.

Although the Saints defence looked shaky at times, they seemed comfortable throughout the game, despite Ryan Bertrand’s late absence.

3. Danso made a solid start:

The deadline day signing was thrown into the deep end when Bertrand pulled out with an ankle injury which meant Danso had to go in at left-back.

And after giving the ball away three times in the opening exchanges, the Austrian international grew into the game and looked composed.

4. Sofiane Boufal’s short cameo was impressive:

Boufal was left out of the matchday squad against Liverpool and returned with a point to prove – and he did exactly that.

He was brought on with the clock ticking down, and like Djenepo, made a quick impact.

The Moroccan weaved his way into the box before teeing it up for Redmond to slot home from close range.

5. VAR is a Saints fan:

VAR has already twice helped Saints out this season.

On the opening day of the season, it disallowed a Chris Wood goal for offside.

And, although it wasn’t used against Liverpool, it came back to help the Saints side for their trip to Brighton.

Lewis Dunk thought he had given the Seagulls the lead, but VAR deemed Dan Burn to be in an offside position.
