SAINTS goalkeeper Angus Gunn is backing England Under-21s to win the European Championship next month.

Gunn was named in Aidy Boothroyd's Young Lions squad on Monday for the upcoming tournament.

Having joined Saints last summer, the 23-year-old had to wait until the second half of the season until he was given the number one jersey.

Gunn was on the bench for the U21s during the 2017 competition and now wants to go one better.

Speaking to the official Saints website, Gunn revealed: “The main thing for me is just to try and stay focused in training to try and get that number one spot.

“The majority of these players have won trophies with England before so there’s no reason why we can’t go on and do it again.

“There’s a lot of Premier League experience in the team but it doesn’t mean much if we don’t gel and play well together for England.

“Hopefully, we can get to know each other on the pitch in training and make sure we get off to the best possible start.

“Going to the last tournament in Poland was a proud moment in my career but it will be even more so if I can play and contribute to a winning team.

“That would be up there with one of my biggest achievements so I hope to do that and make everyone proud.”
