SHANE Long broke a 19-year Premier League record with his speedy goal against Watford on Tuesday night.

The Saints ace netted the opener in just 7.69 seconds to become the fastest scorer in the league’s history, beating ex-Tottenham defender Ledley King by just over two seconds.

The Daily Echo has compiled a list of the 10 quickest goals scored in the Premier League, which features Saints three times.

10. Asmir Begovic – 13.64 seconds (Stoke v Saints, November 2013)

Stoke kicked-off against Saints in this encounter and the ball quickly made its way back to Begovic in goal.

The goalkeeper then proceeded to launch it forward from inside his area, which prompted it to get caught up in the wind.

This led to Saints’ Artur Boruc rushing out to clear it, only for Begovic’s clearance to bounce over his head and into the back of the net.

9. James Beattie – 13.52 seconds (Chelsea v Saints, August 2004)

James Beattie sent Saints into dreamland at Stamford Bridge with his half-volley inside the opening stages of the game at Stamford Bridge.

Beattie capitalised on a defensive error from Joe Cole to loop the ball over Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

The Saints striker then went on to turn the ball into the back of his own net to gift the south-west London side a lifeline.

8. Kevin Nolan – 13.48 seconds (Blackburn v Bolton, January 2004)

Former Premier League veteran Kevin Nolan etched his name into Premier League history with a rapid finish against Blackburn.

The midfielder fired the ball home after being picked out in the box by Kelvin Davies.

Bolton’s lead didn’t last long, though, as Blackburn then went up to the other end and scored through Vratislav Gresko.

7. Chris Sutton – 12.94 seconds (Everton v Blackburn, April 1995)

Ex-Saint Alan Shearer had a part to play in Chris Sutton making this list.

The Premier League highest goalscorer flicked the ball on towards Sutton after it was pumped up the pitch by a teammate.

Sutton then calmly slotted it his strike past the Everton goalkeeper.

6. Dwight Yorke – 12.16 seconds (Coventry City v Aston Villa, September 1995)

It should be no surprise to see Manchester United’s treble-winning Dwight Yorke make this list.

During his playing days for Aston Villa, Yorke was on hand to head past the Coventry goalkeeper from Ian Taylor’s cross.

5. Mark Viduka – 11.90 seconds (Charlton v Leeds, March 2001)

Leeds came racing out of the blocks against Charlton in March 2001, ramping up their charge for Champions League qualification.

Alan Smith nodded a long ball into Mark Viduka’s path before the Australian striker rifled it into the back of the net.

4. Christian Eriksen – 10.54 seconds (Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United, January 2018)

Christian Eriksen ensured Alexis Sanchez had a miserable United debut with an early goal to send Spurs on their way to a 2-0 win.

The midfielder took advantage of a poor touch from Dele Alli to send the ball past David De Gea from 12 yards out.

3. Alan Shearer – 10.52 seconds (Newcastle v Manchester City, January 2003)

Ex-Saint Shearer makes it into the top three with his strike against Manchester City.

City goalkeeper Carlo Nash slipped whilst making his clearance which allowed Shearer to slot home.

2. Ledley King – 9.82 seconds (Bradford v Tottenham Hotspur, December 2000)

King’s long-standing record was set 19 years ago when his deflected shot from long distance got the better of the Bradford goalkeeper.

1. Shane Long – 7.69 seconds (Watford v Saints, April 2019)

Saints ace Long planted himself at the top of the list and into Premier League folklore with his goal on Tuesday night.

Long charged down Craig Cathcart before chipping the ball over Ben Foster.
