SAINTS are a top-five club in 2019 - after one of their best starts to a calendar year in the Premier League.

Since losing their first game under Ralph Hasenhuttl at Cardiff City four months ago, Saints have shown top-eight form.

Daily Echo:

* does not include Arsenal's 2-0 win against Newcastle United last night

But the 1-0 win at Brighton means Saints have 18 points from their 11 games since the turn of the year.

Since ending 2018 with back-to-back defeats at home to West Ham and Manchester City, Saints have shown the sort of form that would have them competing for European competition were it maintained over the course of a season.

Saints have had better starts to a new year in the Premier League.

They had 20 points from their first 11 games of 2016 and 2015 under Ronald Koeman.

And they began 1998 and 1993 with 19 points from the same number of matches.

But their 2019 form is only surpassed by Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.
