STUART Armstrong played 71 minutes as Scotland followed up defeat in Kazakhstan with an uninspiring 2-0 victory over San Marino.

The Saints midfielder was one of five survivors from the Kazakhstan defeat as Alex McLeish made six changes.

But the new-look team failed to immediately build on Kenny McLean’s headed fourth-minute opener against the worst-ranked national team in the world.

Many of the near 3,000 visiting fans vented their disapproval towards the Scottish Football Association board, even after Johnny Russell doubled the lead in the 74th minute.

Russell was twice off target with half-chances before teeing up Armstrong in the 20th minute but Ella Benedettini produced an impressive double stop.

Jamie Forrest replaced Armstrong in the 71st minute and soon set up Russell on the break to net from close range.

Moi Elyounoussi came off the bench for Norway but could not prevent them from losing their opening Euro 2020 qualifier, 2-1 to Spain.

Norway cancelled out Rodrigo Moreno’s 16th-minute opener, a volley from a Jordi Alba cross, through a Josh King penalty soon after Elyounoussi came on for his 23rd cap.

But another audacious penalty from Spain captain Sergio Ramos ensured a win for the home side.

Jan Bednarek stayed on the bench during Poland’s 0-0 draw against Latvia.
