Maya Yoshida starred  as Japan reached  the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup.

The Saints defender was outstanding as Japan kept Saudi Arabia at bay to win today's round-of-16 tie.

Defender Takehiro Tomiyasu's thumping 20th-minute header set up a quarter-final against Vietnam, who beat Jordan on penalties, on Thursday.

Three-time champions Saudi Arabia dominated the tie but Yoshida led the Japanese rearguard to clinch a place in the last eight.
