Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has decided to opt for youth in his first month in charge by picking Yan Valery, Kayne Ramsay and Matt Targett.

Although Targett has been around for a long time, he is still only 23 and has just 31 first team appearances to his name.

The midfield area looks to be well covered with the likes of Mario Lemina, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse.

But Hojbjerg’s suspension has shown how important he is to Hasenhuttl’s style of play.

The Danish international gets stuck in at the back and then aids the transition with a forward-thinking pass.

Hasenhuttl handed Callum Slattery a Saints debut in the 2-2 FA Cup third round draw with Derby and he didn’t look out of place in the middle of the park.

But that was against Championship opposition and it would be a big ask to throw him into the heart of the midfield during a Premier League relegation scrap.

With that being said, Saints may look to add to that area of the pitch – especially with Steven Davis leaving the club- so they aren’t so reliant on the fitness and discipline of Lemina, Romeu and Hojbjerg.

This brings the debate onto whether Hasenhuttl wants to add to his goalscoring options.

The answer should be a resounding yes.

Saints have become far too reliant on Danny Ings’ goals and now that he is out with a hamstring injury, it’s time they offer him some support.

Shane Long has managed to find the back of the net only twice in 56 games, which shows he isn’t going to be the answer.

Charlie Austin bagged the winner against Arsenal in the dramatic 3-2 victory last month, but he doesn’t appear to suit Hasenhuttl’s philosophy.

The duo played together at Derby and failed to create anything of note.

It’s clear that Ings and Michael Obafemi are the way forward, but with both of them out injured, Saints must be looking to bring in some back up.

And with Manolo Gabbiadini edging closer to the exit door, he could be the man to create some funds for Hasenhuttl to reinvest in the side.

Nathan Redmond is beginning to add goals to his game and is clearly flourishing under the guidance of the Saints boss.

Stuart Armstrong has proved he can step up and hit the back of the net, as he did in the 3-2 defeat to Fulham.

However, Mohamed Elyounoussi has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and has had numerous injury setbacks to halt his progress.

Saints were linked with Everton winger Ademola Lookman in the summer and given Hasenhuttl coached him for six months at RB Leipzig, he could be a viable option.

But again, he is still young, and Saints need someone to come in and score the goals to move them up the table.
