SAINTS under-23 manager Radhi Jaidi said last night’s 3-0 defeat to Southend was a ‘wake-up call’ for his youngsters.

The loss resulted in their exit from the Checkatrade Trophy after failing to get out of a group that also contained Cambridge.

Jaidi’s side conceded three goals in 12 minutes and the former Saints defender admitted that if his players want a professional career, they need to improve quickly.

"The only positive was not conceding a goal in the second half. It's a reality check for most of our boys," Jaidi said.

"I know we want to develop players, but this is the level they have to compete at if you want a career in the game.

"I've played in the EFL and I know the demands at this level. We told the boys that it'll be tough, and they saw that tonight.”

Harry Bunn opened the scoring for Southend in the 13th minute before Harry Kyprianou added his side’s second of the game.

Defender Elvis Bwomono sealed the resounding win for the hosts when he bagged his first career goal.

Jaidi was hoping to see a reaction from his young team after their previous loss to Cambridge, but admitted it was always going to be a difficult task for them.

"From my understanding, we have good players who are beginning to mature. But, only in an academy environment. The next step is to go and compete on a senior pitch,” Jaidi added.

"You're playing against men, who are fighting for their careers.

"They had experience, no doubt. It wasn't an easy task for our boys, but we were hoping to see a reaction from the Cambridge game last month.

"Some players stood up to the challenge second half, but the majority need to learn more."
