SHANE Long has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad which has resulted in Michael Obafemi making the final cut.
The striker picked up an injury during Saints’ training session on Friday and was ruled out of Saints' 1-1 draw with Watford.
Mark Hughes revealed that Long may have to undergo a minor surgical procedure to repair the injured ankle.
But Long's withdrawal means that Saints youngster Obafemi has been gifted the opportunity to make his international debut for Martin O'Neill's side.
Obafemi was a surprise selection in the provisional 36-man squad for the upcoming matches against Northern Ireland and Denmark.
The 18-year-old could be about to make his entrance on the international scene before starting a game for Saints.
