ALEX McCarthy will discover today whether or not he’s made Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

The Three Lions boss watched McCarthy in action against Everton just under two weeks’ ago and there has been talk of the Saints goalkeeper getting a call-up.

Mark Hughes backed his shot stopper to get a place in the squad and now McCarthy will discover if he’s made the cut for the Nations League opener against Spain on September 8 and friendly at home to Switzerland on September 11.

McCarthy has never been in any of Southgate’s squads, having last been called up to the senior team two years’ ago when Sam Allardyce was in charge.

The 28-year-old also received a call-up in May 2013, but has never appeared for the Three Lions.

Now, he’ll hope his form for Saints will finally get him on field for England.

Ryan Bertrand will also be hoping to get back in the England mix after missing the World Cup, having been overlooked at the left-back role, with Ashley Young and Danny Rose preferred.

Bertrand has had a decent start to the season and netted a sensational strike against Leicester last Saturday and will be keen for a recall. Five Saints men have already been called up to their respective national teams.

Steven Davis is in the Northern Ireland squad, while Stuart Armstrong will link with Scotland and Mohamed Elyounoussi will join up with Norway.

Shane Long is the Republic of Ireland squad for games against Wales and Poland and may well face Saints team-mate Jan Bednarek, who has been called up to the Polish squad.
