BLACKFIELD & Langley racked up their first three Southern League points on Saturday with a performance described as “solid if unspectacular” by co-assistant manager Chris Farrell.

The newly-promoted Wessex champions did what they had to do to see off Slimbridge 1-0 in their maiden Evo-Stik Division One South game at Gang Warily.

The key moment came on 50 minutes when Rudy Plummer was body-checked by Dean Turner and Liam Robinson stepped up to bury the penalty.

“We were in the ascendency for the whole game really, but we had six players making their debuts and four 18-year-olds on the bench and free-flowing football wasn’t going to happen,” said Farrell.

“Charlie Urry and Liam had a couple of decent chances and Slimbridge had a goalmouth scramble towards the end, but we were solid at the back. We’ll take the clean sheet and three points and move on.

“We had over 100 turn up and we were pleased with that," Farrell added.  "Everyone was buoyant afterwards and, like I’ve said, we’ll continually look to improve the squad.

“We don’t have the side we had last year, it’s a developing squad, and expectations have to be realistic.”

Blackfield hit the road on Tuesday (7.45pm) to face a Fleet Town side who lost their season's opener 3-0 at Street.

Were it not for some outstanding saves by Fleet's ex-Winchester keeper Brendan Norris, the defeat would have been heavier.
