ANDY Hessenthaler will be calling on his senior players to ensure Eastleigh remain defensively switched on following Saturday’s disastrous late collapse at home to Solihull Moors.

The Spitfires looked to have the points in the bag in their National League opener when Paul McCallum fired them in front with a 77th-minute penalty.

But a couple of defensive lapses cost them dear as the Moors completed a 2-1 smash ‘n’ grab raid with goals in the 80th and 83rd minutes.

That now winds the pressure up for two tough away games this week – at Paul Doswell’s Sutton United tomorrow (7.45pm) and John Still’s Barnet on Saturday.

Surveying the wreckage of Saturday’s defeat, manager Hessenthaler said: “We were organised for most of the game and in the first half we never looked in any danger, but we’ve got to stay switched on.

“Teams are vulnerable after scoring, but you shouldn’t have to be.

“The reason you’re vulnerable is that you’re not organised.

“I expect experienced players like Danny Hollands, Reda Johnson and Graham Stack to get them organised – in fact, not just them, the players should all be organising each other.

“Straight away now the players have put themselves under pressure and I expect they (Sutton and Barnet) will be rubbing their hands together seeing we’ve been beaten at home by Solihull.

“We need to look at the video (of Saturday) because if we defend like that again against Sutton and Barnet, we’re going to have a tough couple of games,” he warned.

Eastleigh at least came through the game with a clean bill of health, although it’s possible injury-prone centre-back Johnson won’t feature on Sutton’s 3G tomorrow because he struggles on that surface.

Summer signing Joey Jones, who missed the Solihull game after Achilles/groin trouble, could be in contention.

Sutton opened their season with a 2-2 draw away at National League new boys Harrogate Town on Saturday – ex-Spitfires Jamie Collins rescuing a point for the Us with a 93rd-minute penalty.

Sutton’s ex-Spitfires boss Doswell said afterwards: “I thought it was a fantastic opening game for the supporters and was a fair result in the end, though it could have gone either way in the closing stages.”

Admission is free for under-16s at Gander Green Lane tomorrow.
