STEWART Donald’s proposed takeover of Sunderland is expected to go ahead early this week.

The outgoing Eastleigh owner/chairman met with the English Football League (EFL) on Friday to discuss his plans to take over the Black Cats who were relegated from the Championship last month.

A Sunderland statement released after the meeting said: "Following a meeting with the EFL on Friday, and the provision of further information, we can now confirm that the proposed sale of the club could be concluded as early as next week.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to the EFL for their assistance during the process at what is a very busy time of the football calendar for them."

One of Donald’s first tasks will be appointing a new manager after Sunderland sacked Chris Coleman ahead of the takeover deal being announced.

Meanwhile, former Eastleigh loanee midfielder Ryan Broom has found a new club.

The 21-year-old has signed a one-year deal with League Two outfit Cheltenham Town following his release from Bristol Rovers.

Broom, who came through Rovers’ academy, made 13 appearances for the League One club having joined them at the age of 12.

He spent the final three months of last season on loan with National League outfit Eastleigh where he made 14 appearances and scored three goals, including a brace at AFC Fylde in February.

Discussing his move to Cheltenham, Broom said: “It's a new start and an opportunity I plan to take.”
