SOUTHAMPTON LGBTI groups have reacted to Australia voting in favour of legalising same sex marriage.
A spokesperson for Southampton Pride said the committee is "delighted" that Australians voted overwhelmingly in favour of the legislation and said: "We are all delighted that Australia has voted YES to same sex marriage!
"This is a great step forwards for LGBT+ and human rights.
"Hopefully this will send out a positive message to all of the places where this basic right is still illegal. Congratulations Australia!"
Joe Finch, founder of Isle of Wight Pride - which next year expects to welcome 30,000 visitors as it hosts UK Pride in July - said: "We are delighted for everyone in Australia that the public have instigated an important step towards equality with this plebiscite result.
But he added: "The campaign was not something that we agreed with, it has caused a lot of hurt and upset in Australia and we hope that in the coming months, this can be overcome and that they move towards a positive future together".
