A SMALL piece of Winchester history has been in the spotlight.

Cllr David McLean, Mayor of Winchester, unveiled a new information board at Weeke Pond.

This board was produced in a collaboration between the Conservation Volunteers (TCV) and the Weeke Pond Improvement Scheme (WPIS) to inform passers-by of its history.

The aim is to increase the educational value and impact of this natural feature.

Sited on the Stockbridge Road near to St Matthew's Church this small pond has been a part of the Weeke for almost 1,000 years.

It was first recorded in 11th century manuscripts and has been used over the centuries by drovers to water their beasts when taking them into Winchester, and by local shepherds with flocks on Teg Down.

Although these are no longer farming requirements, the pond provides a lovely natural green aspect and a haven for wildlife.

At the unveiling was Maurice Charrett who almost single-handed battled to preserve and improve the pond.

A small team of local volunteers in the WPIS group help to keep it looking its best and litter free to enhance the environment.
