A BURST water main caused major disruption for drivers on a Southampton road bridge today.

One lane of Northam Bridge, going into the city, was closed throughout the morning.

It comes after staff from Southern Water rushed to fix a burst main, which was reported to the company last night.

Engineers had to cut out a damaged section of pipe, completing the repair shortly after midnight.

Southern Water say no customers' water supply was affected.

One lane of Northam Bridge remained closed this morning while repairs were made to the road.

This caused delays of up to 20 minutes for drivers, with traffic backing up through Bitterne.

Southern Water say they expect the lane to be reopened this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: "We attended a burst on a 10inch main last night on the A3024 at Northam Bridge last night.

"In order to carry out the repair as quickly and safely as possible, we had to close one lane of the road.

"Repairs started at 8.30pm and involved cutting out the damaged section of pipe.

"We completed the repair at 12.15am and no customers’ water supply was affected.

"The road has been reinstated this morning and, due to the depth of tarmac needed, remained closed while it cured.

"We thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we carried out this emergency repair.”
