A WOMAN was taken to hospital after she was injured on an escalator in a Southampton store.

The incident happened at Primark in Above Bar Street just before 2.30pm on Wednesday.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A caller reported a female patient had fallen on the escalator in Primark and was complaining of back pain.

"We initially sent an ambulance to the scene but the crew reported that the patient was injured on the escalator itself, making it difficult for them to safely get her off.

"As a result, we sent our Hazardous Area Response Team to the store.

"The team has additional equipment and skills enabling them to access and transport patients safely from a range of difficult locations.

"The team were able to get the patient into the ambulance and she was taken to University Hospital Southampton for further assessment and treatment."

A Primark spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident which took place at our Southampton store. "Emergency services attended the situation and we will remain in contact with the customer.”
