A REVOLUTIONARY new style of business and living could be grounded.

Plans for the UK’s first hangar live-and-work business homes and aircraft construction hub at Solent Airport at Daedalus in Lee-on-Solent are set to be thrown out after the landlords of the airfield objected to the plans.

Fareham Borough Council has formally objected to the proposals put forward by Southampton businessman Peter Day, saying that the development could “prejudice Fareham Borough Council's vision for Daedalus”.

Under the plans, the scheme would include five separate hangars which would be aimed at aviation businesses.

They would have a ground floor for business use while a residential quarter would be provided upstairs.

Alongside this, there would also be a space to build a four-seater Velocity kit aircraft in one of the hangars subject to a ‘Permit to Fly’ being issued by the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) with the help of students from CEMAST, part of Fareham College, who is also based on the airfield.

The scheme also includes an aviation heritage centre and a themed play area next to the existing visitor’s centre by the control tower.

In a statement, Fareham Borough Council planners added: “The proposal fails to provide significant levels of either aviation related employment or housing and does not represent an efficient use of the site.

“It has not been adequately demonstrated that the proposal would not have an adverse impact on the operation of the airport which could prejudice Fareham Borough Councils vision for Daedalus as a strategic development allocation.”

Solent Airport manager Martyn Francis, Manager of at Daedalus said: “Unfortunately this has been discussed in person with the homes proposer and declined on several grounds.”

Mr Francis highlighted that the properties could obstruct the view of the runway, final approach or taxiway from the control tower which could impact on airport operations.

In a statement, the Lee Residents Association also highlighted their concerns and said: “This particular proposal does not represent an efficient use of the site for either employment or housing and may have safety implications for the operation of the airfield. “Given that this site forms part of, and adjacent to, the Solent Enterprise Zone, this scheme would restrict availability for economic development that would utilise the airfield assets.”

In response Mr Day said: “Apart from the additional employment that these ‘live/work’ hangar homes will bring to the airport, it would also put Daedalus on the map as the first in the UK with hangar homes.“My vision is not going to be different from the councils, it brings aviation businesses to the airfield particularly they are looking at job and housing.

“If the scheme does not go ahead on Daedalus, I will have to build both the hangar homes and Velocity aircraft kits at Newtownards Airfield, near Belfast, as the landowner, the local council and the local technical college are all very keen to go ahead.

“I have invested too much time and money in both projects not to do so.

“With regards to the obstruction of views, the control tower could install CCTV through a live link.”

The plans will be determined by councillors this month.
