A BUSY roundabout in Hedge End will be closed this weekend for roadworks.

Maypole roundabout and its approaches will be closed on June 23 and 24.

Some sections of Maypole roundabout will also be closed between 8am and 6pm, from Monday to Friday until June 22, and traffic lights will be set up.

As previously reported, the work is part of a wider scheme to build the Sundays Hill by-pass.

Developers say workers at the site will try to minimise disruption to people living in the area.

The new road will be 1,200 yards long with a 65ft single-span concrete bridge on greenfield land and will link Dodwell Lane and Pylands Lane.

As part of the project, an extra lane has been created at each of the approaches to Maypole roundabout and the new roads are now being resurfaced.

Work started at the beginning of June with dozens of motorists facing long queues and delays.

They took to social media to voice their frustration, with some of them saying it took them 30 minutes to drive from Hedge End to Botley.

But Craig Sims, from Breheny, the engineering company carrying out the repairs, said the decision to carry out the work during the day was made to minimise unsociable noise levels and ensure that noise and vibration would not impact those living near the roundabout.

The project for the new bypass comes after plans for 1,400 homes at Boorley Green and 250 homes on land off Pylands Lane were granted permission in the past few years.

As previously reported, Heath House Lane in Hedge End was closed for weeks when the work started in March this year.
