A LUCKY dog was plucked from the remains of a block of flats after it was ravaged by fire.

Bulldog Honey was trapped in the burning flats in Park Gate for more than four hours while a team of 40 firefighters attempted to tackle the blaze, on Saturday night.

As rescuers combed through the wreckage of the property, on Botley Road, Honey popped her head up through the rubble.

She was rescued from the charred building and given oxygen by firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue, before being taken to the vet.

Owner Adam Attrell said: "We were out and we got a call to come back because there had been a fire.

"The worst thing we could think of is that Honey had died -worse than losing our possessions.

"The vet confirmed there were no burns and she had good oxygen levels, they were amazed.

"She is fighting fit and we think may have slept through the drama until the firefighters arrived."

As well as Honey, crews also rescued Mr Attrell's two goldfish, another dog from the block and two rabbits.

No-one was hurt in the fire, but two first-floor flats and the roof of the building were badly affected by the flames.

At its peak, about 40 firefighters tackled the fire, using jets, hose reels and breathing apparatus, which broke out around 10.20pm.

Crews from stations used eight pumps, three jets, hose reels and 13 breathing apparatus to tackle the fire, which badly damaged two flats and the roof of the building.

Other flats were affected by the smoke, but half of the properties have been saved.

Hampshire Constabulary is treating the incident as arson.
