HEDGE End was brought to a standstill yesterday as work to resurface a busy roundabout started.

Drivers approaching Maypole roundabout, at the junction of Grange Road and Broad Oak, faced long queues and delays throughout the entire day as traffic lights were put in place and roadwork got underway.

This comes after an extra lane was created at each of the approaches to Maypole roundabout – and the new roads are now set to be resurfaced in the coming weeks.

Sections of Maypole roundabout will be closed between 8am and 6pm, from Monday to Friday until June 22.

The roundabout and its approaches are also set to be closed on June 16, 17, 23, and 24.

But residents, who were stuck in traffic yesterday voiced their frustration on social media.

Elizabeth Ruth Townsend wrote on Facebook: “Several weeks of traffic chaos ahead. Took 30 mins to get from Hedge End to Botley at just before 9am. Not much better on return journey at 12.30pm – queuing traffic from Brook Lane to Maypole.”

Shaun Sadler added: “And they say “use public transport” – can you imagine how the buses must be coping in that?”

The work is part of a wider scheme to build the Sundays Hill bypass which will link Dodwell Lane and Pylands Lane.

This comes after plans for hundreds of homes at Boorley Green and on land off Pylands Lane were granted permission in the past few years.

Craig Sims, from Breheny, the engineering company carrying out the repairs, said it would work during the day to minimise unsociable noise levels.

And added: “There will be disruption to the travelling public which we will try to reduce as much as possible. Those living next to the work will receive the least disruption possible as the work is scheduled for the day and not overnight where lights, noise and vibrations will impact those trying to sleep.”
