IT could be a record-breaker.

Hundreds of people flocked to Eastleigh to take part in the annual Solent Gardeners Fayre.

With 130 stalls, a day bathed in sunshine and hundreds of visitors throughout Sunday, Rotary Club of Southampton say it could be the one to top all others as they attempted to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

Held at the University of Southampton’s sports complex on Wide Lane in Eastleigh, the club said the fayre had surpassed their expectations.

Some come from miles away to camp out the night before and make the most of the day itself.

Rotary club president Nick Vaughan said they were hoping to raise £15,000 from the day.

He said: “I think it all looks brilliant, everyone really has done a fantastic job.

“We are president for one year, and my year will be over soon so this is the one to look forward to.

“It takes a year to organise and put together, so after this it won’t be long until we look further ahead.

“Those who want to book stalls usually do so fairly far in advance so they don’t suffer any disappointment.

“People come from Cambridgeshire and all over the country for this. It isn’t just any gardeners fayre. If we have a good day, we could be looking at £15,000 and all for a great cause.”

Sue and Des Fisher, from Southampton, said they had been coming for the past five years.

Sue, 65, said: “Every year they do a terrific job. We have a favourite stand it helps our garden out!”
