THOUSANDS of people are expected to flock to Eastleigh next week as one of the biggest events on Hampshire’s gardening calender returns.

Green-fingered residents will have the chance to find the perfect plant at the Solent Gardeners Fayre set to take place at the University of Southampton Sports Ground in Wide Lane on June 3.

More than 70 exhibitors will take part in the one-day extravaganza.

Among the organisations and businesses that will showcase their skills this year there are A Sweet Way to Heaven, Chase Plants, Garden Bargains, Yvonne’s Plants and Palms Exotic, which has received an award at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Throughout the day members of the Solent Guild of Woodcarvers and Sculptors will run woodcarving demonstrations.

The annual fair, which celebrates its 20th birthday this year, is organised by Southampton Rotary Club.

Over the past ten years Southampton Rotarians have raised more than £250,000 for a wide range of good causes.

Looking ahead to the fair Rotarian Adrian Smith said: “It’s an opportunity for some of the best flowers and craft producers to exhibit their products to people in Hampshire who are passionate about gardening, craft and helping good causes.”

All the money raised at the event will go towards the several charities supported by the Southampton Rotary Club.

ShelterBox, Southampton City Mission and The Avenue Centre are among the charities that will be represented this year.

Throughout the day live music will be performed by Michelmersh Silver Band and there will be a wide range of children’s activities including face painting and bouncy castles.

“It has become our principal fundraising activity but also it’s an event that families put in their diary each year in advance,” Mr Smith said.

And added: “It’s going to be fun and safe for all the families.”

The event will be run from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free for children and costs £5 for adults and parking is free.
