THREE people who raced to the aid of a woman allegedly raped in an alleyway behind a tattoo parlour in Shirley, Southampton, have come forward to assist the police investigation.

Hampshire Constabulary launched an appeal to find the group, comprising two women and a man, following the attack, on Howards Grove in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They have now contacted the force to help establish more details into the allegation of sexual assault.

To ensure safety, Southampton West Neighbourhood Policing Team has stepped up its patrols in the area and residents are urged to speak to them if they have any concerns.

It comes as Shirley ward councillor Satvir Kaur described the area as “very safe” but warned residents to “remain vigilant”.

The incident happened at around 1.30am in the alleyway behind Guys and Dolls Tattoo and Piercing Studio.

The victim, a woman aged in her 20s, is receiving support from specialist officers and enquiries are ongoing to establish the details of what happened.

A 24-year-old man from Southampton was arrested soon after the offence was reported. He has since been released from custody but remains under investigation.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that enquires are ongoing to establish the details of what happened.

Residents nearby said they heard the police at the scene, but officers could not confirm what had happened at the time.

On hearing of the incident, Cllr Kaur said: “I’d encourage anyone with information to contact the police to help them with their investigations.

“Shirley, traditionally, is a very safe area though it is important for residents to remain vigilant.

“I’ll continue to work with local police to ensure our communities are safe wherever they are.”
