A BURGLAR has been jailed for three years after breaking into a house and demanding cash from a woman who was still in bed.

Jason Geddes, 40, of no fixed address was locked up after he appeared at Southampton Crown Court and pleaded guilty to entering a property at 6am in November last year.

The court heard that Geddes broke into the house at Maryfield, off Chapel Road, by forcing open a kitchen window.

Speaking after the case a police spokesman said: "With no regard for the occupants he decided to enter one of the bedrooms and start making demands for cash to a woman, who was still in her bed.

"The woman’s brother, who was staying the night, overhead the disturbance in the other room and chased Geddes out the address.

"As Geddes was leaving, he dropped some keys. The occupants later reported a mobile phone and £55 in cash were missing."

The keys enabled officers to locate the address where Geddes was staying at the time. He was arrested within 24 hours of the burglary and was charged the following day.

PC Ian Pierce, from the Operation Hawk team based at Southampton Central Police Station said: “Geddes broke into a home with no thought to the distress he may cause the occupants.

"He climbed in through a window just after 6am on a Sunday and without hesitating confronted the people inside, making demands.

“For all his selfish efforts he made off with just a mobile phone and a few notes, leaving the occupants scared and in shock. Finding an intruder in your home has a lasting effect on people.

“Operation Hawk is committed to keeping homes in Southampton safer and getting justice for victims.”
