A HOST of Disney characters paraded through a Hampshire community as Swanmore Carnival started the annual summer fete.

Children as young as three were involved in the ceremony which saw floats made up of popular cartoon stars from Peter Pan to Toy Story.

Among those impressing the judges was the 101 Dalmatians entry from Swanmore pre-school that featured a group of young children covered in spots which took the carnival prize for the junior entry.

Also winners were the Crasswell family and their float of Mary Poppins and the walking entry from the Newtown School of Ballet.

Leading to an afternoon of events at the Swanmore recreation ground, hundreds of people flocked to the summer fete as the procession of dozens of vintage and classic cars and motorcycles travelled through the village before going on display.

Also part of the annual event were impressive BMX stunt rider Chris Doney, music from Swanmore College Brass Ensemble and trampoline demonstrations.

"It's a great success," said fete organiser John Sharpe.

"Hundreds of people have turned up for the fete and we really want to make it a big thing for the future."
