Henry Cort player Debbie Sayce bagged a sensational 23 goals as the Fareham school finished runners-up at the National under-16 indoor hockey finals.

Played at the National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace, Sayce got off to a flier in the first pool game against Thorpe House with a hat-trick.

This was followed by an amazing seven goals in the game against Hymers, champions of the North of England.

Then the teenager claimed further hat-tricks against Blundells School and Midlands champions, Dame Alice Harpar School.

A 4-1 win over the Midlands side qualified Henry Cort as pool winners to meet Helena Romanes, the east of England champions, in the semi-final.

True to form Sayce scored her third goal of this game with just a minute remaining for a 3-3 final score.

In a dramatic, nerve-tingling penalty shoot-out, Sayce scored two more vital goals, with Henry Cort scraping into the final thanks to a successful 19th stroke taken superbly by Sam Cox.

In the final against west country side Gordano School, the tie was deadlocked at 2-2, before the Hampshire side ran out of steam to lose 5-2.

Sayce still maintained her impressive record by scoring both goals in the final.

It did not end there for Sayce, as eight of the Henry Cort team who also turned out for Gosport Borough in the under-19 competition.

Gosport entered the tournament as south of England champions, yet with the average age of the squad at just 16, they did not progress beyond the pool stage.

Sayce, however, still scored five goals at under-19 level, in the four pool games, which included a hat-trick in Gosport's last game against Cheltenham Ladies College.
