E-scooter and cycle parking bays have cropped up in roads in Southampton – by why has the white writing been removed?
Southampton City Council placed hired e-scooter and bike parking bays at 14 locations across the city at the end of May – a scheme which has been met with backlash from residents and business owners.
Originally, these bays were accompanied by white writing stating: “E -scooter & cycle hire.”

Many have now been left why the writing has been tarmacked over, despite the bays and bollards remaining in place.
The council has now explained the reason for the tarmacking stating that ‘some of the bays used the wrong wording in error'.
A spokesperson from Southampton City Council explained: “The road markings placed on some of the bays used the wrong wording in error and our highways partner, Balfour Beatty Living Places will correct the bays and complete the works by June 21.”
The scheme, designed to encourage greener travel in Southampton, is up for review for two months.
