A lifeboat crew have told how they rushed to the aid of two victims of a boat explosion in Lymington.

Volunteers on board Lymington's lifeboat were first on the scene following reports of an explosion in a vessel moored at Lymington Yacht Haven on Tuesday (June 11) at around 12.44pm.

They found two casualties, one with significant burn injuries to his face, hands, and legs.

Lifeboat crew administered emergency first aid to both victims, cooling and wrapping burns along with administering a nebuliser to negate any risk of inhalation burns.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance crews, the HART rescue team, and HM Coastguard were also in attendance.

The casualties were handed over to the care of paramedics and air ambulance doctors for further treatment before being taken to Southampton General Hospital.

Lifeboat crewman James Douch told the Daily Echo: "All the rescue services and marina staff worked together seamlessly to administer vital casualty care. We wish the casualties a speedy recovery."

The lifeboat crew was made up of Declan O'Riordan (Helm), James Douch, Simon Nuding, Phil Baker, Piers Horobin, Allan Punton, and Ed Wallrock.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard told the Echo on Wednesday: “Lymington Coastguard Rescue Team was sent to a report of a fire on a vessel at Lymington Yacht Haven on June 11.

"The alarm was raised at about 12.50pm.

"Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and South Central Ambulance Service also attended, and the RNLI's inshore lifeboat from Lymington was sent to support.

"Two men were taken to hospital."

The Coastguard added that one of the men aboard was in a worse condition than the other.

Speaking to media outlets previously, an HM Coastguard spokesperson added: “Lymington Coastguard provided first aid, safety cover and evacuation from the vessel.

“We believe it was a flash fire rather than a continuous fire – which means it started from an explosion.”
