Plans for a residential development on the site of a former gasworks near St Mary’s Stadium have been given the green light from Southampton City Council.

The plans were approved by the Southampton City Council's planning committee yesterday evening, June 4, 2024.

The proposed development, by Hawkstone Properties, details the transformation of the Britannia Road site into a vibrant community hub.

Featuring four blocks ranging from eight to 17 storeys high, the site would see 384 build-to-rent flats at the Britannia Road site.

Edward Norman, design director at Corstorphine & Wright, expressed excitement about the project and added: “We have spent the past four years collaborating with Hawkstone, Southampton City Council, and our fellow consultants on the development of this landmark residential scheme.

“Our vision for the project is to contribute to the sustainability and prosperity of this part of Southampton adjacent to St Mary’s Stadium.”

Architects, Corstorphine & Wright, added the proposal has garnered significant anticipation, with the design echoing the site's industrial heritage in both architectural and landscape elements.

The development is poised to inject new life into the area, promising both high-quality residential units and enhanced public spaces and amenities.

Mr Norman continued: “The distinctive scheme, which will form the Northern Gateway to the Itchen Riverside and City, has been designed to echo its industrial past.”

Construction is also continuing on the Corstorphine & Wright designed Bargate Quarter in Southampton.
