The death of a 72-year-man at his home near Newtown from a gunshot wound is not being treated as suspicious, police say.

David Leslie Jones, who had a gun licence, died from his injuries and was found with a shotgun on the floor at a property in Kerry last month.

An inquest into his death heard that police officers went to the house after receiving a call from a man at 10.40pm on Wednesday, April 24.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Assistant coroner Rachel Knight said she was satisfied that it was necessary to open the inquest because there was a reason to suspect that Mr Jones' death was "unnatural".

Pathologist Dr McGregor gave a provisional cause of death as a gunshot wound following a post-mortem conducted at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my condolences to the friends and family of David Jones at this sad time," she added before adjourning the hearing on Friday, May 3, to allow a full inquest to be held at a later date at Pontypridd Coroner's Court.
