The jury has gone out to consider its verdict in the trial of a 16-year-old boy who stabbed a man with a Samurai Sword near Daisy Dip.

The jury left the courtroom to begin its deliberations just after 11.40 today on the fifth day of the trial at Southampton Crown Court.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of attempted murder after the incident in October last year.

The court was previously told how the boy had caused a "massive wound" to Ben Glasspool's back after striking him with a sword.

Mr Glasspool had gone to the area amid a dispute and was on Laburnum Road at the time when the 16-year-old turned up in a Ford car driven by a woman.

The prosecution said the boy dealt a number of blows with the weapon, hitting his legs before narrowly missing his throat.

He then attacked both of his arms as the woman drove the car closer, causing him to worry she was going to hit him with it.

Ben then tried to run before the boy delivered a final blow causing a "massive wound" to his back, prosecutor Charles Gabb said.

He was rushed to hospital with the sword having cut straight through three of his ribs and penetrated his lung.

The boy previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.

He told a jury that he had gone to get the sword for "self-defence" and "just thought it would scare them off a bit" after he claimed Ben Glasspool "chucked away" a crowbar.

He said he "swang the sword randomly" and had hit him in the legs.

Asked by judge Christopher Parker KC what he was attempting to do, the boy answered: "Obviously like hurt him a little bit but there wasn't intention to kill."

Both the woman driver - Nicola Kayley, 45, of Bluebell Road, Southampton - and an older boy - have admitted offences over the incident, the jury was told.

The trial continues.
