A NEW beer called Out On A Shout has been named in honour of a rescue service that receives about 100 calls a year.

It comes after plans to stage today's Bands in the Boatshed music festival at Calshot Lifeboat Station were defeated by logistical problems.

The Vibrant Forest Brewery saved the day by agreeing to host the event itself - and has also created a beer to mark the occasion.

Based at the Purlieu Centre on Hardley Industrial Estate, the brewery is a long-standing supporter of Calshot RNLI.

Members of the crew were invited to name the new beer and, after a series of votes, agreed it should be called Out On A Shout.

Bands in the Boatshed has been organised by RNLI member Andy Bean.

He said: "We were delighted when the Vibrant Brewery offered to brew a special beer for the event and offered the chance for us to name it. We look forward to seeing it on sale this weekend."

Vibrant Forest Brewery's general manager, Ryan Dack, added: "Out On A Shout has been brewed on our pilot kit specifically for Bands In The Boatshed.

"We are excited to be supporting the RNLI with this event and hope that supporters enjoy the special beer."

The service had been operational for only three weeks when the volunteers received their first "shout".

The SS Oriana was on her way to Australia and New Zealand when a blaze broke out in the boiler room. She managed to return to Southampton with Calshot lifeboat standing by alongside.

A much more serious incident took place two months later when the Pacific Glory collided with another tanker off the Isle of Wight, causing a huge fire.

Calshot lifeboat saved 11 people but 13 others lost their lives.

In 1998 a flying boat was attempting to land on Southampton Water when one of its floats exploded, causing the aircraft to sink. Two people were killed, including the mayor, Mike Andrews.

Cllr Andrews saved the lives of fellow passengers but was unable to escape himself.

In 2015 Calshot lifeboat helped rescue the crew of the 51,000-tonne car transporter Hoegh Osaka after it developed a severe list in the Solent.

The 590ft vessel was deliberately beached on the Brambles Bank to prevent her from sinking.
