A 10-year-old girl has shared her excitement after she spoke to the Princess of Wales during her visit to Southampton

Rosie Faye, a young royalist, was among the lucky people who got to speak to Catherine and present her with a bouquet of flowers.

Rosie stood next to her 75-year-old grandmother Carol as she gave the future Queen consort roses and lilies she picked by herself.

She said: "I didn’t know what to say. I was a bit anxious and excited.

"She said she liked my T-shirt.

"When I gave her the flowers, she told me, ‘Thank you, they are lovely.’"

Rosie beamed with joy, her dream of meeting the Princess coming true on a Tuesday afternoon.

The young girl was also accompanied by her mum, Kayleigh Faye, whose sister lives in one of the flats at Hope Street.

The Princess of Wales was visiting the city to open the new residential community aiming to support women in the justice system.

During the royal visit, crowds eagerly waited outside the building hoping to catch a glimpse of Catherine.

New mum, Courtney Lee, also brought her six-week-old baby boy, Cillian.

Speaking to the Echo, Courtney said: "We saw on the news this morning that the Princess of Wales was going to be in Southampton, so I thought, what a better treat for my son to come and see the future Queen in his hometown.

"This is the first time I've ever been to a royal appearance or event, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

"Today, everybody got very excited when (Catherine) showed up, but it was great.

"It was lovely to see her. She looked amazing, and what better way to spend an afternoon?"

A nurse at University Hospital Southampton also joined the crowd as soon as she finished her night shift.

Tegan Budge, 26, said: "I heard about the visit this morning on the news.

"I’m a massive royalist, I go to all the events.

"I have come straight from the night shift just to be here.

"I’m very excited to be here, hopefully, I’ll be able to give her the flowers."

As time passed, the crowd outside Hope Street grew.

Sisters Lorna Fyffe and Vivienne Golden, originally from America, got to be part of this historic moment by chance.

Lorna said: "We are only in Southampton to see our family for a week.

"For me, it’s really an experience because I never thought I'd see one of the members of the Royal Family. This is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Vivienne added: "It’s our first time seeing someone from the Royal Family, and I don’t think anyone in our family has seen them too."
