YACHTING communities stretching along the shores of the River Hamble were awash with fun for a very special celebration.
Action-packed events ashore and afloat were part of Solent Celebrations in July 2000.
The celebration was a millennium salute to how the famous stretch of water had helped shape history.
The safe harbours and deep sheltered waters have for centuries protected the Royal Navy and helped to prevent foreign invasions.

The Solent has been the home to some of the world’s finest vessels and has been used by many famous maritime heroes. most notably Admiral Nelson.
In a unique waterborne event, more than 150 craft – from dinghies to powerboats – took part in the Great Solent Treasure Hunt.
River Hamble in recent years
There were plenty of clues floating around as the armada of treasure hunters set off from the River Hamble to return at the end of the day with their plentiful booty.
On land was a spectacular splash of colour to the Hamble scene as The Band of Royal Corps of Signals marched through the yachting haven to the foreshore.
Other crowd-pulling events included Hamble market day, Warsash family day at Strawberry Field, a classic car rally from Hamble to Warsash, and a flypast by the Blue Eagles Helicopter Display Team.
