THE RIVER Itchen has turned red.
Over the weekend the water at the Ocean Village Marina turned a deep shade of reddish-brown.
It is believed the sudden change in colour is due to “red tide”.
This is when aquatic plant life becomes highly concentrated and causes the colour of coastal waters to change - also known as algal blooms.
High temperatures are thought to trigger an increase in algae.
