A POLICE officer and two off-duty firefighters saved a cyclist's life after he was taken ill and fell from his bike.

During the emergency a quick-thinking motorist stopped the traffic while one of the residents rushed out and closed the other end of the road.

Posting on social media, Hedge End Cops said the cyclist suffered a "medical episode" in Winchester Road, Botley.

They added: "A few seconds later the next person along was an off-duty police officer on his motorbike who started CPR. They next two people along were off-duty fire officers in separate vehicles, one of which contained a defibrillator which was put to use.

"A local lady in her car pulled up and stopped the traffic whilst a resident of a nearby house stopped traffic from the other end including turning around a bus.

"Minutes later Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance arrived as did the South Central Ambulance Service and a First Responder.

"Once the medical team had worked their magic on him he was deemed suitable to go in the ambulance and was taken to Southampton General Hospital.

"Later in the evening he was well enough to have a phone conversation with his wife, who obviously couldn’t go into the hospital with current Covid restrictions.

"He is as well as can be expected and will be in hospital for a few days. A full recovery is expected.

"An onlooker remarked at how lucky the man was to have the right people (off duty or not) in the right place at the right time. It was apparent that all services, and members of the public worked together to give this man the very best chance possible.

"A big thank you to everyone involved yesterday."
