A HAMPSHIRE motorway will be closed this week.

Motorists are being warned that the M27 will be closed overnight between J9 near Park Gate and J11 near Fareham.

It will be closed each night from 9pm until 6am from today (Monday) until Sunday, May 3.

Diversions will be in place via the A27.

Highways England is upgrading the motorway between J4 at the M3 interchange and J11.

It is turning the hard shoulder into a permanent running lane, making a dual four-lane, smart motorway.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "We’re continuing to undertake works to convert the M27 to a smart motorway.

"During this time, we will carry on with our activity within the central reserve between junctions 8 and 11, ahead of a future switch to the verges at these locations, once the central reserve is complete.

"A 50mph speed restriction will remain in place along this section of the motorway, until the scheme is fully operational and open to the public. This will enable road users to travel through our roadworks without compromising their safety, or that of our workforce."
