A HAMPSHIRE pensioner hit by a car just yards from her home died of severe head injuries, an inquest was told.

Pedestrian Sheila Watson was struck by a Volkswagen Tigura in Haydock Close, Totton, where she lived, on March 23.

The 74-year-old was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where she died three days later.

A post-mortem examination was carried out and the cause of death was revealed when an inquest was opened and adjourned at Winchester Coroner's Court.

A full inquest is due to take place at the same court on January 18 next year.

Following her death Ms Watson's family issued a statement through Hampshire police in which they described her as "lovely, kind and thoughtful".

They added: "She was loved by so many. She will be greatly missed by us all, our hearts are broken."
