THIS was the once elegant row of houses that made up Southampton’s East Park Terrace in the days when the street was rated as one of the most prestigious addresses in the area.
Now, as a result of the Second World War Blitz and modern redevelopment, these buildings, that had Andrews Park as an extended front garden, are just a part of Southampton history.
At the end of the 19th century the row boasted four doctors’ surgeries and the homes of four clergymen, while at number 26 lived Captain JH Jellicoe, whose son, John, grew up to become Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa.
Next door at number 27 lived George Brinton, who built the terrace and hosted a visit to Southampton by the great Italian popular hero, Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1864.
