ALTHOUGH members of a dementia support group can no longer meet up in person, they have still been entertaining each other amid the coronavirus lockdown.

Portswood Dementia Action Group are coming together each week to tell funny jokes, perform card tricks and play music - all through a screen.

Every Tuesday, members such as Simon Hill share comedy while Ron Meldrum plays piano and showcases his magic skills.

The group had to cancel all usual meetings due to the COVID-19 outbreak but have continued to stay in contact online.

Speaking after their meeting on Tuesday, founder of the group Katherine Barbour said: "It was a very lively session tonight with lots of laughter and it cheered me up greatly.

"I am finding this enforced shutdown very difficult so can't imagine what it must be like if you are caring for kids or for people living with dementia who cant fully understand what is happening."

Katherine is also writing a newsletter which can be posted to anyone who wishes to complete activities to fill their time in isolation.

"People living with dementia have had their day care and normal weekly routine disrupted and they are struggling to understand what is happening. These efforts are an attempt to address this social isolation."

The group are using video app Zoom to stay in contact and invites anyone in Southampton to join them every Tuesday at 6pm.
