THE Hyde900 community excavation in Winchester is still on but organisers say it may need to be postponed.

The dig, seeking evidence of Hyde Abbey, the last known resting place of King Alfred the Great, is planned to take place from May 21-25.

Donna Price, dig coordinator, said: “However we are very aware of the current situation and we may well have to postpone the event to later in the year at a time it can be safely run within government guidelines.”

Hyde900 is making available an option to register interest in the event, so that those that may wish to take part can be kept up to date with the plans for the event and the opening of bookings.

Its website and registration link is here http://www.hyde900.org.uk/

Hyde900 launched ten years ago with the aim to find out more about the burial of King Alfred the Great, England’s greatest king.

Since it has evolved into celebrating the history of the Hyde suburb of Winchester, including researching Hyde Abbey, one of the greatest monasteries of medieval England, that lies under the streets of the suburb.
