THIS remarkable picture shows an aerial view of Southampton in the 1950s and it reveals some of the most important industrial areas of the time.
In the foreground is the greater part of Northam, with its riverside wharves and berths, the big railway marshalling yard, gas works, timber yards and factories.
Just beyond Northam is a part of Chapel and the old docks and on the far side of the river is Woolston shipyards.
Across the water you can catch a glimpse of Hythe and the Fawley oil tanks.
It was also in the days before the Itchen Bridge, and before the construction of many of the tower blocks that are now a familiar part of the city’s skyline.
